Spassky 'Draws' A Breath
Reykjavik, Iceland (UPI)— Danish grandmaster Bent Larsen, said Wednesday Russian Boris Spassky would be content with draws in the next couple of games against American Bobby Fischer so the world champion could get back into form and beat the temperamental challenger.
But an aide to Fischer said the American was not going to allow Spassky any chance to catch his breath.
“Spassky must be dreaming if he thinks Bobby will trade punches for a couple of games. Bobby is only seven points away from the world title, his life-time ambition, and every draw is a two-day postponement,” said Fred Cramer, an aide and vice president in the International Chess Federation.
The 10th game is scheduled for 5 p.m. (1 p.m., EDT) today with the 29-year-old challenger playing white, meaning he gets the first move.
After spotting Spassky a two-game lead, Fischer has won four and drawn three of the last seven games. He holds a 5.5 to 3.5 lead over Spassky after Tuesday's game ended in a draw.
