Celebrities To Play In Tourney
Rancho La Costa, Calif. (AP) — Bobby Fischer, the chess master making one of his rare public appearances, rated the biggest threat to defending champion Hank Greenberg Monday in the second annual Dewars' Sports Celebrities Tennis Tournament.
Fischer, who meets Russia's Boris Spassky in Iceland July 2 for the world chess championship, is training at the La Costa Country Club with daily tennis and running routines. He says physical fitness is vital to chess.
Greenberg, the former Detroit Tigers' slugger, won the inaugural tournament a year ago. At 60, he is the oldest competitor in the event.
Also in the field are O.J. Simpson, running back of the Buffalo Bills; Gene Washington, wide receiver of the San Francisco 49ers; Mike Garrett and Deacon Jones of the San Diego Chargers; Rick Barry of the New York Nets; Elgin Baylor, former Los Angeles Lakers star; Whitey Ford, former New York Yankee pitcher; Gail Goodrich, guard for the Los Angeles Lakers; Merlin Olsen, Los Angeles Rams tackle.
